What is wrong with my resting heart rate?

Question by David: What is wrong with my resting heart rate?
I’m a 17 year old, healthy teenager, who loves to run and exercise.
I’m in track, and I run every single day. My personal best for the mile race is 4:50.
I recently figured out that my resting heart rate (RHR) is 80. How could this be? I eat the right food and get enough sleep. Why do I have such a high RHR? Is it my genetics?

Everyones different, 60-80ish bpm is considered and average rhr. But someone could be 40 and someone else of the exact same fitness could be 90.

My anatomy and physiology professor once told me that we are as different on the inside as we are on the outside. That means that your heart may be unique to you. It may be slightly small for your body size. Genetics can be a factor. If this is the case then your heart would have to beat faster to pump the same amount of blood as another person that is the same height and weight as you, and is in similar physical condition. Also at any given time your resting heart rate can vary throughout the day. In the early morning and late afternoon it will be slower than during the day. You can get a better idea of what your actual resting heart rate is by taking several readings throughout the day, throw out the highest and lowest readings and average the rest. A “resting” heart rate means that you have been in a sitting position for at least 5 minutes and not excited or anxious. Unless you experience any heart related symptoms, shortness of breath, chest pain or palpitations of some sort you are ok. If you do then you should get it checked out by a doctor. Keep up the running. 4:50 is a great time for your age. In 1852 Cadet Marshall of the United Kingdom set a WORLD record (adult male, not junior) of a 4:52 minute mile and that was when they were using stopwatches, so your are in good company.

Why do you think your heart rate is fast? A normal resting heart rate is 60-100bpm. If yours was 80bpm, you are within the normal range. You should be worried if it falls below 60bpm or is above 100bpm while at rest. Since you are a athlete, don’t be scared if in the future your heart rate is as low as 50bpm. A low heart rate like that is completely normal in athletes.

    Hope this helps!
