Question by fuumaxkamui69: Severe stomach pains, sweating and heart rate increase related to alcohol or foods?
Summary: Female, 26 yrs old, healthy body weight, no illness or pre existing medical conditions. Been drinking off and on for a few weeks, mainly margaritas. I drank one Special Brew rather quickly two nights ago on an empty stomach while also eating oreos and Pop Tarts (not one of my finer moments, haha).
About 10 minutes after I finished the drink (24 ounces, fruit flavored, about 6-8%), I experienced SEVERE stomach pains, not intestinal pains, which were so intense they seemed to radiate through my shoulders and arms, although the source of the pain was in the stomach. During the episode, I also experience an increased heart rate, not very fast but noticeably faster, and excessive sweating. I also experienced slight nausea. I could not move, I was doubled over on the couch the pain was so severe. Then, after 20 minutes, the pain disappeared. It was as though it never happened. I felt fine!
The heart rate, sweating, and nausea combined with the fruit flavored drink and refined sugar snacks make me think that this was blood sugar related. But I seriously would like an explanation from someone as to what exactly triggered this episode so that I can be very sure it doesn’t happen again. Was it a combination of drinking too fast and eating the foods on an empty stomach? Is this common? I never drink alcohol without sweet mixers so I hesitate to blame it on sweetened alcohol alone.

Sounds like dumping syndrome. It’s when food moves through your intestines too fast and it causes symptoms like that. You hear about it a lot among people who have had gastric bypass surgery, but many other people get it too. I’ve never had gastric surgery but I’ve had it a few times. I got it one time when I took some medication that I had never taken before. I got really dizzy then sweaty, then I got really nauseous and light headed and had to lay down on the floor to recover. Fortunately I’m a nurse and knew what was going on, but if I didn’t I would have been scared to death! The fact that you ate oreos and pop tarts along with alcohol makes me think that’s what’s going on. Blood sugar can play a part in this. It’s probably nothing serious.

Question by TwinkaTee: How do you change your perspective on food?
For so long I have eaten to my heart‘s content. Anything yummy, I ate and never in moderation. Now that I am trying to lose weight, I have had to leave these foods behind, but for some reason, eating healthy makes me feel deprived. I know that bad foods are doing nothing for my health and that healthy foods are, but how can I change my mindset and like eating healthy food? Any ideas or advice?

Think of it like this (it’s what I did while becoming vegetarian and still now): One, the junk food slows you down, makes you sick, and makes you feel tired. Same goes with meat, you’ll have a lot more energy if you quit eating meat. Two, fresh fruits and vegetables are light, fill you up, and taste yummy. Not into plain fresh veggies? Try steaming them with a little bit of ginger on top. Whatever it takes to get you to eat them. Try to avoid canned anything..there is way too much salt and preservatives. This doesn’t pertain to your case, but when I thought about how much suffering the animal goes through, and it’s much healthier for the environment, it was much easier for me to stop eating meat. I’m very competitive in everything I do (band, school, everything), and since I’ve lost some weight from this “all-natural” diet you could call it, I have a lot more energy and strength. Basically, you need to figure out something that works for you, and nobody else can do that. Just think: Substituting sugary foods will save you money and trips to the dentist, Substituting meat will save you pounds nobody needs, and substituting white grains for whole will help keep you erm, regular. If you don’t want to go through that, you can do things in moderation. Try eating your favorite extra cheesy pizza only once a week, and make those your ‘cheat days’. For example, if you do well the whole week, let yourself have that pizza on Saturday without feeling guilty, but eat one or two pieces, not the whole pie. Also remember, nobody’s perfect, so if you slip up and eat a whole can of cheese spray and crackers, just drink some water, brush your teeth, and don’t dwell on it. Don’t say you’ll start over tomorrow, next week, or at New Years, because trust me hon, you never will. Just remember your weekly reward, and hopefully that will keep you motivated on going. Good luck with it!
you say your deprived for eating healthy foods but the fact is, your feel deprived because it doesn’t taste good…. i consider myself as a vegetarian and who likes meat!
at first i only eat meat and junk foods… but the moment i saw others like my parents and FRIENDS eating healthy food which i avoided, i change my eating habits. all i can say is, get a companion(S) who will eat together with you while eating the foods you avoided… eventually you will like the taste of those foods!!!!!!!
Balance your food-change from sugar to honey or even water-thats how i got healthy_instead of using sugar for anything add some honey to it_dnt drink soda that often-try drinking water everytime u feel like like drnkin soda-change candy for fruits-vegetables can b made into really great recipes_b creative____try eating more spagetti than meat-go for a walk every morning-try dancing at ur favorite music-try having fun outside ur house-have enough sleep-try granola it tastes good!drink alot of water-u can try writin down everting u eat-drink milk- and b positive_being in great shape and healthy somtimes is the minds problem-dont give up ~~~~never try a diet-they dnt work—–wat we all need is a lifestyle not a diet-eat—never skip breakfast-it helps ur metabolism burn calories—play sports or just kick a ball—realx never freak out!
start off slow
cut off soda from your diet and just drink water
water will help you to feel fuller and if you’re a teen with acne your skin will improve soooo much
drink a glass of water before you eat anything
actually listen to what your body is telling you (how hungry you are)
give up sugary drinks and just have water
and get 2 servings of fruit and 2 of veggies a day
